Whey protein isolate has become the gold standard for post-workout recovery, but taste and mixability can vary dramatically across brands. We sampled five popular whey isolates over two weeks, evaluating flavor accuracy, texture, mixability in both shaker cups and blenders, and digestive comfort.
Chocolate and vanilla variants tested closest to their labeled flavors across brands, while fruit flavors ranged from deliciously refreshing to artificially sweet. Mixability varied: two brands dissolved almost instantly with just a shaker cup while two left slight clumps without a blender ball. Digestive comfort was notably better with isolates containing lactase enzyme blends.
The winning protein delivered clean taste, instant mixability, and no post-shake bloating at 25g protein per scoop. For those sensitive to dairy, the plant-based alternative option we also tested is a worthy consideration at a slightly higher price point.
